Historical Information

previous hit Mathews  next hit previous hit County  next hit was named for Thomas previous hit Mathews  next hit, of Norfolk, the Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates in 1790 when the previous hit county  next hit was formed from Gloucester previous hit County  next hit.

Most records were burned in Richmond on 3 April 1865, where they had been moved for safekeeping during the Civil War.

Scope and Content

Organization Records, 1908-1960, undated, consist of files and correspondence from the Civil War Commission; general Red Cross records and Red Cross Hurricane Relief records; flags, correspondence, minute books, and other records from the Sally Tompkins chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy; and WPA/Emergency Relief Administration correspondence and reports.
